A new group to take us in new directions
OEMs in the consumer vehicle business are dramatically changing how they design and assemble their products. They are increasing their outsourcing of these activities to their suppliers. Goodyear, as a major tire and molded product supplier, needs to redefine its role in this changing environment. Sam Gibara requested that Goodyear's technology organization review what was taking place, determine the companys strengths and weaknesses in terms of vehicle design and assembly, and develop alternate business approaches for consideration by executive management.
Last November, Goodyear formed the New Vehicle Systems group under the direction of Bill Hopkins, vice president, Global Product Marketing and Technology Planning, to accomplish Sams objectives. more

Goodyear's Akron, Ohio Technical Center, completed in 1983, is one of two technical centers the company operates in the U.S. and Europe. The seocnd is in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. Additionally, the Dunlop tech center in Hanau, Germany, reports to the head of the Luxembourg operation. more
